Visiting Ireland is a great way to explore your own Irish heritage and history, and see where your roots are. I have clients that wanted to see where their names came from and the meaning of the names. Others want to actually visit and meet some of their family members still living there.
If you are of Irish descent, you may find that much of the research is best done in Ireland because it requires sifting through archives in church basements or talking to parish priests. And it can be really rewarding to visit the places where your ancestors lived, to walk the same paths, and see exactly how they lived!!
Even the graveyards can give you clues and connections to your family’s past. It might sound funny, but the graveyards in Ireland are really quite breathtaking! They’re often in the middle of nowhere – a beautiful green pasture off the side of the road, or on a picturesque coastal setting – sometimes with church ruins falling around the stone grave markers.
If you go to Ireland and visit your cousins, stop into the town pubs and hear the local stories. You will learn a lot about your heritage – and I bet you’ll want to keep coming back.
