Most major airport-adjacent hotels sell rooms in 4-8 hour blocks for a fraction of the overnight rate. Six-hour layover in Doha? Book at the Oryx Airport Hotel inside the terminal. Shower, sleep, walk back to your gate.

Even better: Singapore, Munich, Amsterdam, Dubai, and Istanbul all have sleep pods or transit hotels inside the secure zone. No visa needed.

Long layovers used to be endurance events. They don't have to be.

Sixth in the series: cities whose names aren't wha Sixth in the series: cities whose names aren't what you think.

Los Angeles was founded in 1781 under a 55-letter Spanish name honoring the Virgin Mary and the nearby river. It's been shortened progressively for two centuries. Today "LA" is the shortest official version of the longest founding name of any major American city.

The Los Angeles River is still there. It's mostly concrete now — but the city literally couldn't exist without it, and locals are slowly bringing it back to life.
The croissant descends from the kipferl — a cresce The croissant descends from the kipferl — a crescent-shaped pastry that had been baked in Vienna since at least the 13th century.

The story goes that the shape commemorated the 1683 Ottoman siege of Vienna, when city bakers working through the night detected the Turks tunneling under the walls and raised the alarm. To celebrate the victory, they baked pastries in the shape of the crescent on the Ottoman flag. Historians dispute the details, but the pastry itself is definitively Austrian and older than the siege.

The croissant arrived in France in 1838, when an Austrian entrepreneur named August Zang opened the Boulangerie Viennoise on Rue de Richelieu in Paris. The French adapted the recipe with laminated butter dough — and made it famous worldwide.

The category of French bakery pastries is still called viennoiserie. "Things from Vienna." Even the French acknowledge it.
Cuba is one of the few places on Earth where you c Cuba is one of the few places on Earth where you can walk down a street that hasn't been designed for you. No chains. No global luxury brands. No shopping mall next to the cathedral. What most travelers describe as "stuck in time" is actually just what happens when a place has been economically isolated for 60+ years.

That's changing. Slowly, unevenly, and not in a straight line — but changing. American visitor rules keep shifting, the tourism infrastructure is being built out, and the parts of Havana that feel most cinematic today will be the first to be renovated when investment returns at scale.

If Cuba has been on your list — the real Cuba, not the resort strips — the window is now. Getting there as an American traveler is more complicated than most destinations, which is exactly the kind of thing an advisor makes possible.

Skipping the airline meal is one of the most commo Skipping the airline meal is one of the most common mistakes travelers make on long-haul flights. It feels virtuous — the food isn't great, you're not that hungry, you'll just eat when you land.

Don't.

Airline meals are timed to match your destination's clock, not your body's. Eating on the plane's schedule is the single most effective way to reset your circadian rhythm before you land. Skipping meals is what makes jet lag brutal. Eating them is what makes it manageable.

Bonus rule: skip the alcohol. It dehydrates you at altitude in ways it doesn't at sea level, and it disrupts the sleep you're trying to bank for the time change. Drink water on the plane. Drink wine when you land.

Small things. Big difference. This is the kind of stuff we think about so you don't have to.

Chicago is named after wild leeks. Specifically, the pungent onion-like plant that grew in thick clumps along the Chicago River when French explorers arrived — the Miami-Illinois word for it was shikaakwa, meaning "stinky onion." The French wrote it down as Chicagou. Americans made it Chicago.

The third-largest city in the United States is named "stinky onion place." Save this one for your next trivia night.

The Dom Pérignon legend — the blind monk tasting h The Dom Pérignon legend — the blind monk tasting his first bubbly wine and shouting "Come quickly, I am tasting the stars!" — is one of the most successful marketing campaigns in history.
None of it is true.

The real Dom Pérignon (1638-1715) was a Benedictine monk and cellar master in Champagne. His job was to stop the bubbles, which were considered a defect. Bottles were exploding in cellars, killing workers. The wine was seen as flawed.

The English were actually the first to celebrate sparkling wine — they'd been importing still Champagne, adding sugar in the bottle, and enjoying the resulting fizz for decades before French monks made peace with it.

The "tasting the stars" quote? First recorded in a 1889 advertisement. Nearly 200 years after Dom Pérignon died. Written by an advertising copywriter.

Travel myths die hard. Working with someone who knows the real stories makes every trip more interesting.
